One of the player’s main actions in SimTrain is construction. Simply put, the player builds train stations and the tracks between them on a given NYC map.

  1. The player presses the wrench button to enter construction mode.
  2. Once in construction mode, the player will press either the station or the track button to build the station or extend the track. They will also be prompted on how much the station or track costs.
    1. Check: Confirm to build the train station. /Cross: Cancel building
    2. Clicking on the station will give the players an option to remove or upgrade the station.
    3. For the explanation of train stats, please refer to: Stats
    4. For the cost of the stations and tracks construction and upgrades, please refer to: Tracks & Stations
  3. Once the player is done building, they press the X button to go back to the main screen. (not in the mockup)

The construction will be grid based to give the player some limitation. Train stations can only be placed on the lattices, and the train lines can only be build along the grid lines. The limitation is there to avoid the map from getting too overwhelming in later games, and also so that the players can navigate a simplistic map. A chess board number/letter system will be used here to help the player easily locate where they are, and also find out where they placed certain stations or tracks.

Construction is a critical way we hope to demystify the MTA to the riders. Seeing how the train systems come together, we hope the players will be able to see the train map as a considerate layout of a city plan, instead of an incomprehensive spider web of information. By experiencing the difficulty of building a train system themselves, the player will be able to understand how much though the MTA has put into planning out the MTA train system.
